Welcomes Zone Winner - Samuel Constant

The Welcomes competition, in partnership with the Evening Chronicle, invites everyone at the Dott 07 Festival to share their thoughts, experiences and ideas on what makes them feel welcome. Festival goers can add their entry to the Welcomes Wall to have a chance to win a spanking new Dawes Bike, a glowing Wattson device and Berghaus fleece.

On the opening day of the festival (Tuesday 16 October) the winning entry was created by Samuel Constant. Congratulations Samuel! See Samuel's winning entry at the bottom of the blog.

If you would like to enter the competition all you have to do is come along to the Dott 07 Festival, Baltic Square, visit the Welcomes Zone and leave your thoughts, experiences or ideas on the Welcomes Wall. If you prefer you can bring along an image or an object of something that makes you feel welcome. One of the Dott crew will photograph you with your image/object, print it off, and add it to the wall. All entries must be no bigger than A5. The winning entry is printed the next day in the Evening Chronicle. [More]

Should sustainable development therefore be concentrated in cities, where economic progress can most feasibly be de-coupled from transport intensity? Or are there ways to ensure that rural communities have access to services by using transport resources more smartly? In a stroke of genius, Stella Hall, Creative Director at Culture10 commissioned Media 19 to produce the Welcomes Project for Dott 07 – an innovative programme of world-class festivals and events to draw attention to the North East as a vibrant, creative, welcoming place. The region has been identified as the most welcoming region in the country and Culture10 saw this special Dott 07 year as the perfect opportunity to celebrate and build on this sterling quality. We are all obsessed with welcoming. Firstly, it is a very personal business. If you’re not good at it, you could find yourself home alone on a Saturday night watching repeats of Friends, speed-eating Oreos. Welcoming is also big money. One of the most successful films of all time, ET is about the innocence of a child welcoming a stranger. It digs deep and provokes us to ask the question – how would I react if I discovered an alien in my closet!? [More]

Welcome Middlesbrough Football Team

Middlesbrough Football Club have signed up to be part of the WELCOME project. Manager Gareth Southgate and team players Jonathan Woodgate, Jason Euell, Brad Jones, Lee Cattermole and Adam Johnson (to name a few) talk about the welcome from supporters, home and away and the experiences that make them feel good as they run out onto the pitch. Young people from the Middlesbrough Football Club in the Community project at Eston Academy have been taking part by working with Media 19, mapping their area and identifying places that are unwelcome or welcoming and their ideas for making lasting change. We'll bring you the full story, including photographs and video later this month. Shoppers at The Mall Community Shopping Centre and audiences at Middlesbrough's Music Live event gave their response to a set of images and questions aimed to reveal the places and experiences that make us feel welcome or not. Welcome to Port Clarence and Newtown

The Welcome project team are busy working with community groups from The Clarences and Newtown Community Resource Centre through a series of workshops. During the workshops people taking part develop thoughts and ideas on what makes them feel welcome in their area - or what doesn't. Don't forget you can take part in the Welcome project by sending us your thoughts or pictures on what makes you feel welcome in the North East. Find out how you can take part. Ken Harris, Industrial Chaplain/Chair of The Clarence's Community Partnership and Danielle Barnes, Women and Children's Project Officer are working with the Welcome project to create their own 'welcomes' and encourage participation from friends, colleagues and members of The Clarence's community through a series of open workshops and special events taking place at The Clarence's Community Centre, every Wednesday until the end of May from 1600 - 1800.
